The Dignity Project

Empowering women and individuals with disabilities through training, care, and community

Why We Exist

Across Kenya and Tanzania, many women, and people with disabilities, face isolation, rejection, and limited opportunities after pregnancy, loss, trauma, or generational poverty. The Dignity Project steps into these stories with a different narrative - one that restores purpose, provides access to healing, and reaffirms that every life has value.

What We Do

→ Training & Mentorship
We run year-round training centers that equip women and individuals with disabilities with practical skills, spiritual formation, and business mentorship. In Tanzania, two centers host two cohorts per year, training ~15 participants per group. In Kibera Slum, our young mamas program walks with 20–25 women over a two-year journey, followed by a third year of spiritual discipleship and therapeutic care. In Western Kenya, our disability empowerment program serves 10–15 participants through adapted training and ongoing support.

→ Support for Young Mothers
One of our central focuses is walking with young women navigating early pregnancy and motherhood. These women often carry layers of rejection, loss, and responsibility - and they rise with the right support. Our multi-year program includes skill-building, trauma care, and discipleship - ensuring that no woman walks alone as she rebuilds.

→ Holistic Support
Our programs go beyond skill-building. We offer trauma-informed care, counseling, and spiritual discipleship. Participants are supported with essentials like meals, transportation, healthcare, childcare, and emotional care - making sure nothing stands in the way of growth.

→ Business Startups
We help graduates launch small businesses by offering seed capital, coaching, and peer support. This enables them to create sustainable income while building dignity and stability within their communities.

Empowering Young Mamas in Kibera Slum to Rewrite Their Stories

Life in Kibera for Girls and Young Women
Kibera Slum is one of the largest and most densely populated urban slums in Africa. For young girls growing up here, the risks are devastating:

Early Pregnancy: Many drop out of school and are left to navigate motherhood alone.

Exploitation and Abuse: Some resort to prostitution just to provide food, exposing them to more trauma.

High Risk of HIV/AIDS: Unsafe circumstances leave these young women vulnerable to life-threatening infections.

Addiction and Despair: Many turn to drugs to numb the emotional and physical pain of their reality.

Without intervention, these young mamas are trapped in cycles of survival that make escaping poverty almost impossible.

The Lily Among Thorns Training Program

Lily Among Thorns is a two-year discipleship and training program that equips young mamas, many between the ages of 16 and 22, with life-changing skills and emotional healing. These young women receive:
Parenting and Life Skills: Helping them nurture and raise their children well.
Vocational Training:

  • Cooking and baking foods to sell.

  • Hair styling, braiding, and coloring.

  • Manicures and pedicures.

  • Sewing and jewelry making.

  • Computer and technology skills.

  • Office and administrative training.

Counseling and Inner Healing Work: A safe space to release pain and discover their identity in Christ.

Discipleship and Mentorship: Weekly meetings with Spiritual Moms, Mentors and Leaders who have walked similar paths, offering compassion and guidance.

These aren’t just skills—they are lifelines, giving these young mamas a way to provide for their children, break free from shame, and rewrite their story.

The Risks Without This Program
Without intervention, these vulnerable young mamas face a bleak future:
• Forced into prostitution to provide for their children.
• Increased risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.
• Addiction and hopelessness in the face of overwhelming pain.

Lily Among Thorns gives these girls a way out—a path toward healing, stability, and lasting hope.
